ABOUT OQC

At Oxford Quantum Circuits (OQC) we are building quantum computers to enable life-changing discoveries: from new drug modelisation to longer-lasting battery technology and portfolio optimisation. We have launched Europe’s first Quantum Computing as a Service (QCaaS) – to bring quantum to our customers’ fingertips and help them improve their operations and trailblaze new commercial and scientific approaches.

Our team is composed of 40 people with various backgrounds in quantum physics, nanotechnologies, hardware, software and business operations from marketing to intellectual property. We are all bound by the desire to put OQC at the forefront of the quantum revolution and help solve some of the world’s most challenging problems.

ROLE OVERVIEW

With OQC’s cloud-accessible quantum hardware platform, we interact with customers who wish to tailor quantum computation to their needs. As an OQC Algorithm Developer, you will create, adapt and optimise quantum algorithms to fully exploit OQC’s quantum computing hardware. This will involve the development of error mitigation and correction techniques for improved performance. In addition, you will advise R&D activities regarding application requirements including processor connectivity and native gatesets as well as coordinate with customers to improve algorithmic efficiency for their needs. You will work closely on multiple and varied projects within our multi-disciplinary team of physicists, nanotechnologists, electrical engineers, software developers, and more towards OQC’s mission of building a quantum computer.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Development, maintenance and testing of advanced algorithmic benchmark programs for superconducting circuit-based quantum processors
  • Coordination and secondment with hardware and software teams for improving algorithm performance
  • Advising quantum processor design and operation to improve computational efficiency
  • Simulate processor performance given experimental characteristics and identify solutions for improvement; including error mitigation or correction.
  • Identifying potential collaborators in the algorithm and benchmarking space, and managing strategic partnerships
  • Work directly with customers to design and build algorithms suitable for their purposes
REMUNERATION

£50,000 – 65,000 pa., based on experience.

We also offer multiple benefits, from private medical insurance to Employee Assistance Cash Plan, from cycle to work to gym and fitness memberships. All our employees also participate in our ESOP. For more info, visit https://apply.workable.com/oqc/

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS
  • A PhD/post-doctoral or industry position with extensive experience (i.e. 2+ years of R&D work) involving application development for physical quantum computers
  • Experience with the simulation of quantum algorithms
  • Experience with optimisation techniques covering a range of linear and nonlinear methods with an ability to evaluate computational complexity
  • Excellent problem solving, troubleshooting and analysis skills
  • Ability to work embedded in an agile team environment; ideally familiarity with project management software, version control and code peer-reviews
  • Technically versatile and able to learn new skills quickly
  • Proactive and enthusiastic attitude towards complex work projects, whether working independently or in a team
  • Ability to work with a range of stakeholders, communicating effectively at the right level for the audience
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS
  • Capability and eagerness to learn independently about new subject area(s) and underlying technologies
  • Scientific publication/presentation of results, whether in person or in writing, especially within the field of quantum information processing or superconducting circuits
  • Experience in working with customers/partners to collate product requirements
  • 2+ years experience in commercial software development
  • Experience working with distributed computing and other concurrent processing models to achieve good algorithm performance
LOCATION & TRAVEL

OQC’s office is located in Shinfield, Reading. There will be a requirement for occasional travel throughout the UK and elsewhere abroad for conferences, meetings and engineering visits.

APPLY NOW

As part of our application process we ask that you also provide us with a cover letter outlining why you think you would be a good fit for the role and what attracts you to OQC. Applications without a cover letter including this information will not be considered.

We look forward to hearing from you!

At OQC we are not just hoping you’ll fit in our culture. We aspire to thrive, as a company and as people, thanks to your diversity of thought and background.
